Course Description

In this Upper Division Humanities Synthesis (C-3) course. W e will cover such topics as: personifications of evil through time and diverse cultures; constructions of the monstrous "other" in arts, religious, and political discourse; cross-cultural analysis of ghost and the undead narratives; supernatural horror; the cultural use of demonic encounters; pseudoscientific discourse within cultural context; institutional and cultural use of binary oppositions of good vs. evil. Themes explored mainly through literature, film, and theoretical works.

We’ll do this using student-centered learning. Peg will not lecture (except ONCE) and she won’t give you any tests or quizzes. You’ll generate the knowledge through reading, writing and discussion. How cool is that?

Class Texts:

  1. Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House (You may buy a real book but here’s the free versions)

Free PDF of Hill HOUSE

Free Audio BOOK

  1. Toni Morrison, Beloved (You may buy a real book but here’s the free versions)

FREE BELOVED PDF (you're going to have to copy/paste-- I can't make a Chrome Extension clickable on Canvas):

chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/viewer.html?pdfurl=https%3A%2F%2Fbooks-library.net%2Ffiles%2Fbooks-library.online-12222233Xb2Q3.pdf&clen=1198647&chunk=true

Free Audio Book for Beloved, chapter by chapter

  1. Class Reader—ALL Non-Novel (that is not Beloved or Hill House) readings will be in the week's module at the module page on canvas.
  2. We’ll watch a few movies too. The first one is free thru a service CPP pays for. After that, you may have to pay for some but that feels fair to me given there’s no text book and I’ve found free versions of both novels.

Course Goals and Outcomes

After completing this course, students should be better able to:

  1. Identify the societal, political, and cultural mechanisms used to influence and shape contemporary conceptions of demons, the dead, and the monstrous other in the real world
  2. Analyze and evaluate representations of the monstrous other and develop an interpretive framework for connecting these representations to their larger cultural and historical context
  3. Understand the ways in which images of monstrosity can reinforce or subvert culturally constructed classification systems (e.g., normal/deviant, natural/supernatural, human/beast)
  4. Compare and contrast how ideas of demons, the dead and monsters are used in literature and the arts across time and place
  5. Interrogate the concepts of the ‘monstrous’ and the ‘Other’ in relation to each other, examining from multiple perspectives the human need for monsters that lurk around the edges of our world
  6. Synthesize theories of monstrosity and apply to a broader understanding of the ways in which culture constructs, classifies, and codifies ideas about morality, gender, sexuality, the body, race, age, region, religion, and science

Student Responsibilities

  1. Attend Class.
  2. Be on time for class
  3. Check YOUR CPP EMAIL AND OUR Bb PAGE REGULARLY.
  4. Talk! Participate in discussions1
  5. You are also required to produce work that critically engages in the course content. It is not important that everyone agrees with each other, or with PEG.
  6. Our community respects diversity. Each person will be expected to speak responsibly and listen without judgment. Please see the instructor if you need special accommodations for a disability, and for cultural or religious obligations.

Peg’s Responsibilities

  1. You must turn in your responses on time. It’s only fair I must grade them and return them on time. SO you turn in stuff one class, you get it back the next class.
  2. You have a right to have emails answered in a timely manner. I will answer emails within 24 hours of you sending it AS LONG as you don’t send email on the weekend. I do not get paid enough to work 7 days a week, so I may answer email on the weekend, but I do not feel any responsibility to do so for sure.
*If I don’t answer you it means I didn’t get your email. People type my last name incorrectly
  3. If I expect you to arrive in class on time (and I do), you can expect that I will arrive on time as well. I kinda have to with the Zoom thing…..
  4. The classroom is a safe discussion space. We will all be respectful. This includes me. I will treat you like honest people with valuable ideas, not as cheaters I haven’t caught yet or as people who don’t know anything.

Classroom Assignments

Reading Responses: You’ll have a ONE PAGe, SiNGLE SPACED, reading response each week. RRs are worth 10 points each, if done correctly and on time.
1. RRs should contain SUMMARY, ANALYSIS, CONNECTIONS & any questions you might have.

  1. RRs are handed in on or before the day they are due. Late assignments will get half credit. Assignments will disappear within two weeks of their due date—this is to keep you from handing a bunch of stuff in the last week. I hate that!
  2. You may take TWO BYEs on RRs (two you can skip with no penalty), but you may not use your bye on the novels, Hill House or Beloved. .

Class Videos/Podcasts: In lieu of class meetings, many weeks you will watch a video of some kind. There will be a video assignment/prompt in that weed’s module on Bb. You will also have TWO VIDEO BYES. You can use them on ANY Video/Movie/Documentary I assign. Video Assignments are worth 10 points.

Attendance/Participation: There will be an attendance sheet for our Class Meetings. You get 5 points for every Zoom Meeting you attend, if you are on time, stay the whole class period and say at least one thing. You also get ONE ATTENDANCE BYE’ or excused absence.

BYES in Summary: You get two reading response byes (tho the 2 novels are not eligible), two video byes and one attendance by.

Group Project/Radio Plays: You will, in a small group, collaborate to make your own short horror film. Films will be 12-15 minutes long. There will be a prompt and help along the way. Slackers and lollygaggers will be accounted for—so if someone doesn’t help, they won’t get the grade.

Radio Play Outline: 15 points each

Radio Play Script: 15 Points each

Peer Eval: 5 points

Radio Play Completed: 20 points

Radio Play Listening: 10 points

Total for Project: 65 points

Your Choice Movies: Peg has THREE lists of movies at the end of this syllabus. You’ll pick TWO films, not from the same list, watch and write  them up.  See the MOVIE PROMPT that goes with the Movie List. These aren’t due till the final weeks of the semester….These films write upas are 10 points each. They are eligible for 'byes.'

Grades

Grading:

Your Points Divided by Total Points=Your Grade Percentage.

No assignment is weighted more than the others.

93-100=A

89-92=A-

87-88=B+

82-86=B

79-81=B-

77-89=C+

72-76=C

71-69=C-

68-60=D

59 and below=F

Student Honesty Policy

Don’t plagiarize. The first time Peg catches you she warns you and doesn’t let you re-write. The second time she catches you she gives you an F. Plagiarism is using someone else’s work and not citing it—passing off other work as your own is stealing and that’s not cool.

Instructions for
